History & Heritage
Nagpur, also known as the "Orange City," has a unique spot on the Indian map because of its beautiful orange orchards that stretch as far as the eye can see. Aside from its name, the city's connection to oranges has a deep historical and cultural significance. The origins of Nagpur's citrus legacy may be traced back to the 18th century, during Bhonsle's reign over the city. The Bhonsles encouraged citrus planting, laying the groundwork for a citrus empire. After recognising Nagpur's soil had potential for orange growing, these monarchs zealously pushed it. As a result, Nagpur began to be known as a centre for citrus production.
