  • History & Heritage

The Devanahalli Pomelo was brought to India some 200 years ago, but urbanization—particularly the building of Bengaluru International Airport—nearly drove it to extinction. This unusual fruit has been preserved because to conservation initiatives, such as a biocentre in Hulimavu and protection under India's Geographical Indications Act.

Mahatma Gandhi, during his visit to the region, tasted the Devanahalli Pomelo and appreciated its taste, suggesting that the authorities conserve this rare fruit variety. The fruit is a part of the local agricultural tradition and contributes to the dietary habits and economic well-being of the region.
